RESUMO

Like all young people (YP), those who are gender and sexuality diverse (GSD) spend their youth exploring and discovering their identities; but unlike their peers, they must consider whether, how, and when to disclose their GSD identity to others in a dynamic process of visibility management (VM). At school, GSD YP actively test social reactions, interpret attitudes, and assess safety, ultimately seeking belonging as their authentic selves. Our systematic review explored findings from 16 qualitative studies capturing GSD YPs experiences of managing visibility in schools internationally. Data were thematically synthesized, and seven themes were constructed. The process of visibility management is fluid, a negotiation with social norms that GSD YP's very existence transgresses. YP search for, and through activism actively shape, accepting environments in which they can safely be their authentic selves. GSD YP are actively asking school staff for help in creating open communities where all YP can find a place to belong, to fight to be visible. We offer some suggestions for how we might begin.

RESUMO

Queer theory is a disruptive lens that can be adopted by researchers, educators, clinicians, and administrators to effect transformative social change. It offers opportunities for anesthesiologists, critical care physicians, and medical practitioners to more broadly understand what it means to think queerly and how queering anesthesiology and critical care medicine spaces improves workplace culture and patient outcomes. This article grapples with the cis-heteronormative medical gaze and queer people's apprehensions of violence in medical settings to offer new ways of thinking about structural changes needed in medicine, medical language, and the dehumanizing application of medical modes of care. Using a series of clinical vignettes, this article outlines the historical context underlying queer peoples' distrust of medicine, a primer in queer theory, and an understanding of how to begin to "queer" medical spaces using this critical framework.

The rise of neo-liberal governments and ultra-conservative movements has been reinforcing cisheteronormativity and racism, thus generating inequalities and inflicting even more lethal risks and suffering upon minorities. Conjuring the imposition of austerity regimes, limitations on State action and the emptying of social property in favor of self-responsibility for managing one's own life and health, the issue of differences started being forged as a point of instability and threat to such political and economic premises and purposes. One of the consequences is the widespread circulation of discourses filled with hate and contempt for diversity. This study aimed to understand how discourse intersections are established between markers of difference and the liberal rationale in terms of economy and the conservative rationale in terms of customs, focusing on the (dis)articulation surrounding the precariousness of diverse parenthood and conjugalities. The results of this study point out that the larger democratic density of a given society or sociocultural relationship, the greater the possibilities of positively affirming otherness and difference, which are important foundations for health care, and citizen (racial, sexual, gender and environmental) rights.

RESUMO

This essay intends to share perspectives that constitute, in multiple and contingent forms, a transfeminist enunciation locus in Latin America. Seeking approximations with decolonial and trans+feminist studies, in their relations with issues of gender identities and expressions, sexualities and bodily diversities, the perspectives we share are related to different geopolitical contexts in the region and, despite a situated emphasis on the Brazilian context, we attempt to delineate epistemic, political, economic and affective closeness for trans, travesti, non-binary lives throughout 'Latin American' territories. We are interested in working, from our travesti anthropofagies (Silva, 2018), with concepts such as decoloniality, cistem-world and cisheteronormativity, instrumentalising them in the sense of a broader transfeminist contribution than one merely linked to the realm of its 'specific issues'. These approximations and interests converge in confronting historical contexts of growing conservatism, both general and specific to issues of gender identities and expressions, sexualities and bodily diversities, while a variety of resistance possibilities emerge across academic, institutional and social movement spheres. We will try to outline, from some episodes in the recent period, some strategies, propositions and confrontations which could be related to transfeminist theories and practices, as well as the political obstacles presented by our regional contexts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prevailing sex education (SE) model falls within a neoliberal prevention- and risk-oriented paradigm. This model ignores the identity dimension of sexuality, is based on the cis-heteronormative and ethnocentric matrix and stigmatizes sexual and cultural diversity; this has significant consequences for sexually and culturally diverse adolescents and youth. In this study, we explored the potential of the identity dimension of SE to prevent violence toward sexual and cultural diversity. Specifically, our objective was to identify the influence of heteronormative and ethnocentric variables on violence exerted against trans* and gender-diverse people and people from minority ethnic groups. METHODS: A total of 623 Spanish adolescents with a mean age of 14.73 years and an age range of 13 to 18 years participated in the study. Students completed a questionnaire that included measures regarding violence toward sexual and cultural diversity, gender stereotypes, sexist attitudes and rejection of sexual and cultural diversity. We performed two hierarchical linear regression models. RESULTS: Students who exerted the highest amount of violence toward trans* and gender-diverse people were those who showed the lowest endorsement of expressive traits and the highest endorsement of instrumental traits as well as the highest level of hostile sexist, heteronormative and hostile racist attitudes (the five predictor variables explained 29.1% of the variance of gender-bashing). These same variables-except expressiveness-and benevolent sexism explained 46.1% of the variance of rejection of minority ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for a comprehensive, intercultural, critical and queer SE aimed at transforming the classroom into a space that promotes social transformation through an educational practice that is transgressive and critical of cis-heteronormativity and normative ethnocentrism.
